Goodbye to 'Doctor Who'? BBC has just canceled one of the most famous series in history

Nowadays, it is normal for television series to last 4 or 5 seasons, and the audience can consider themselves lucky. That’s why it is so surprising that a series with 63 years behind it, divided into 41 seasons and 892 episodes, is still going strong. Nowadays, it’s normal for television series to last 4 or 5 seasons, and the audience can consider themselves lucky. That’s why it’s so surprising that there is still a series with 63 years behind it, divided into 41 seasons and 892 episodes. Even if you’re not a fan of science fiction, you’ve surely heard of Doctor Who, and the good news is that you’ll have time to catch up…. because the BBC is going to give it an indefinite break.

It’s never TARDIS

However, fans were more than nervous, because the last episode of the series aired in May 2025 with a cliffhanger that no one quite understood. Since then, absolute silence. We did not have the usual Christmas special, Disney+ decided to let it go after only financing two seasons, no one revealed the identity of the new Doctor… And now we know why.

After months of rumors, BBC has announced that this year we will not have a Christmas special, and in fact, it has canceled its collaboration with Russell T. Davies, the showrunner, and his production company, Bad Wolf. Davies returned in 2023, after 13 years away from the series, and many are hoping that this dismissal signifies a much-needed renewal in the franchise… if not a hiatus, as happened between 1989 and 2005.

That said, the BBC has already announced that more than a definitive cancellation or goodbye, this is a see you later: Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC and this bidding reaffirms the BBC’s ongoing commitment to it, ensuring that the audience can continue to enjoy the series for many more years”. Additionally, they have taken the opportunity to try to reassure die-hard fans.

“This decision has not been made lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but to prepare for future seasons, it was decided that instead of concluding this phase with a special, we prefer to bet on the long-term future of the series to ensure that, when the TARDIS lands again, it does so in all its glory. In other words: it’s time to wait and embrace our sonic screwdriver, because this is going to take a while.
