Compose with AI: Google and Universal Music Offer a Unique Opportunity to Craft Your Own Song

Google and Universal Music want to join forces to develop a somewhat controversial application.

Since the emergence of artificial intelligence, the technological landscape has undergone significant transformation in just over a year. The immense potential of applications like ChatGPT or Midjourney has managed to captivate major companies, leading to a wave of innovation.

For better or worse, the revolution sparked by OpenAI‘s ChatGPT has set a significant precedent. Companies from various sectors have begun training their own models for application across a range of processes. In the midst of this race to achieve “the best AI,” Google and Universal Music aim to join forces to develop a somewhat controversial application. This app would allow us to create songs using the voices of their artists, generated by artificial intelligence.

Universal has previously expressed concern about the misuse of its catalog. The proliferation of AIs has led us to encounter songs sung by artificial voices imitating real singers almost everywhere. It’s no secret that the majority of generative models are being trained on copyrighted content.

The trigger that raised alarms within the music industry was the song “Heart on My Sleeve,” which used generated voices of Drake and The Weeknd. This song was eventually removed from Spotify and TikTok after accumulating millions of streams.

Thanks to this application, artists and composers would receive financial compensation for each song that utilizes their content. However, we’ll have to wait quite a while before we can see the tool in action, as it hasn’t been developed yet.

Google is already doing its part. In January, it announced the release of MusicLM, a generative model capable of composing songs based on a written description. According to Google, their model has been trained with over 280,000 hours of music and spans a wide range of musical genres.
