The European Commission has fined Google 890 million euros under the Digital Markets Act, the first DMA penalty the company has faced. The case goes back to March 2024, when the Commission first opened proceedings.
That 890 million euro total also makes this, based on the enforcement record so far, the biggest fine yet under the EU’s new platform rules.
Of the total, 460 million euros is tied to Search. Regulators say Google gave its own shopping, hotel, travel, and sports results better placement than rival services, without offering the transparent, fair, and non-discriminatory terms the DMA requires. The other 430 million euros covers Google Play, where regulators say developers were prevented from freely steering users to cheaper payment options outside the app store.
Google now has 60 days to comply. If it doesn’t, it could face periodic penalties of up to 5% of Alphabet’s average daily worldwide turnover. The DMA itself allows fines of up to 10% of global annual revenue for a first breach, and up to 20% for repeat offenses.
The case began in March 2024, after the DMA’s obligations took effect, and it follows Google’s 2023 gatekeeper designation by the European Commission for Search, Android, Chrome, and Google Play. Apple and Meta had already been fined in April 2025, 500 million euros and 200 million euros respectively.
If you follow Big Tech regulation, keep an eye on this one. The European Commission says the DMA is now driving real product changes. Google says some of those fixes make its services less usable, even as the company tests new EU Search layouts and updated Play steering terms.
