Google Health gets an update and Apple Health celebrates it: this is how we can sync our data

Google Health, formerly known as the Fitbit app, has been updated with several interesting new features. One of the most important is that in version 5.05 it lets us send the data to Apple Health collected from Fitbits and Pixel Watches. All our activity is now in Health, alongside the data from the iPhone itself and from our Apple Watch.

A two-way connection between the two platforms

Google Health was already receiving information from Apple Health. The update now makes the sync two-way and gives us much greater flexibility when it comes to combining devices, since it syncs workouts, sleep, vital signs, steps, and distance. We can check trends and metrics in the Health app or ask Siri for certain data.

For now the system covers only the main metrics, but could expand to more categories such as heart rate variability in the future.

How to turn on syncing with Apple Health

With this move, Apple Health becomes an even stronger centralized, private hub for our health data. After installing the free update from the App Store, we can connect both platforms with these steps:

  • Open the Google Health app.
  • Tap Connections.
  • Go to Apps and services.
  • Choose Apple Health.
  • We tap Get started and grant permission.

More control over our health information

Version 5.05 also adds the Smart Health Links system to send medical records via a link. Along with access through Google Health CLI, this makes it much easier to make the most of each measurement.

Apple Health gets data from more devices and maintains its role as the secure and private central hub for information. A simple connection that gives us a much more complete history.
