Grand Theft Auto 6 now looks set to hit retail without a disc. The “physical” edition currently being reported is a box with a download code inside, not a playable disc. An early Rockstar Support email from Rockstar Games seemed to suggest there would be a disc version, but the latest reporting points the other way: don’t count on one at launch, or in the months after. That likely comes down to two things, keeping leaks under control and the broader move away from physical media for massive releases.
For people who just want to play Grand Theft Auto 6, that boxed code version will still get them there, and it may still sell well. Stores can put it on shelves and sell it to players with digital-only consoles. But for anyone who buys boxed games to collect them, install from disc, lend to someone else, resell later, or keep for preservation reasons, the frustration makes perfect sense.
That reaction also folds into the bigger argument around ownership, along with the Stop Killing Games debate. Retailers including Video Games Plus and Loot Box Gaming have reportedly said they won’t carry Grand Theft Auto 6 in this boxed download-code format.
You can still pre-order the boxed code at retail, and analysts including Circana’s Mat Piscatella and The Game Business’ Chris Dring don’t think the lack of a disc will do much damage to sales. Still, markets like India and parts of Europe bring up harder questions about region locks, consumer law, and what all-digital access really looks like.
