Nintendo has updated U.S. pricing for some upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 games, and digital copies are now cheaper than physical ones. So far, this only applies to certain Nintendo first-party releases, not Nintendo’s entire back catalog or every game on the platform. The clearest example so far is Yoshi and the Mysterious Book: $59.99 digitally and $69.99 physically, a $10 gap.
That’s a change from Nintendo’s usual approach on the original Nintendo Switch, where digital and physical versions generally launched at the same MSRP. There have been a few one-off exceptions, like Nintendo Switch Sports, where the physical edition effectively cost more because it came with a leg strap. Nintendo says the difference “simply reflects the different costs associated with producing and distributing each format,” so this looks more like cheaper digital pricing than a straightforward hike for physical copies.
For people who usually buy Nintendo’s first-party games digitally, this shift matters. Analysts have argued for years that publishers prefer digital sales because they cut manufacturing and distribution costs, keep buyers inside the platform’s own store, and sidestep the used-game market. You can already see the new pricing on U.S. listings for upcoming first-party Nintendo Switch 2 games.
