Today, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick laid out the marketing plan for Grand Theft Auto 6. The idea, he said, is to build anticipation, not basic awareness. Zelnick’s point was simple: marketing can make a great game bigger, but it can’t do much for a bad one. That sounds like real confidence that Grand Theft Auto 6 can live up to the pressure around it. For players, the message is pretty clear. Rockstar Games isn’t trying to explain what Grand Theft Auto 6 is, or convince people to care. Almost everyone already knows. The job now is to turn that awareness into urgency, hype, and actual purchase intent.
Rockstar Games’ sparse reveals are already doing exactly that. The first Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer became YouTube‘s most-viewed non-music video in its first 24 hours, according to Rockstar Games. Later, a 27-minute Extended Look on Netflix pulled in more than 31 million views in its first week and reached No. 1 in 87 of 93 tracked countries, according to Netflix. And none of this is happening in a vacuum. It sits on top of Grand Theft Auto V’s 230 million sales, according to Take-Two Interactive, plus the millions of people still playing Grand Theft Auto Online, also according to Take-Two Interactive.
If you’re following Grand Theft Auto 6, keep an eye on this, especially with analysts projecting $3 billion to $4 billion in launch-day revenue, and with almost no room for mistakes on quality, execution, or pricing.
You’ll have to wait on Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive’s official channels for the next Grand Theft Auto 6 reveals, along with details on release platforms.
