H.D. Carlton confirmed on Instagram on July 15, 2026, that Haunting Adeline is being adapted for film. It’s the first unambiguous public sign that the project is actually moving. Beyond Carlton’s post, though, there’s nothing else out there yet: no studio, no producer, no director, no cast, no release date, and no word on the creative direction.
Her announcement also points to a broader adaptation , one that covers the full Cat and Mouse Duet, Haunting Adeline and Hunting Adeline. Those books have become a dark romance phenomenon, pulling in more than 948,000 Goodreads ratings, according to Goodreads, and generating the kind of buzz that keeps circulating through online book communities long after release week.
The reaction, if the film goes forward, will probably look a lot like the reaction the books have always gotten. This story follows a writer who’s targeted by a dangerous stalker, and it deals directly with stalking, sexual assault, kidnapping, and graphic violence.
That creates a narrow lane for any adaptation. A film that stays faithful to the books could draw serious backlash. One that tones everything down could lose the readers who turned the Cat and Mouse Duet into such a hit in the first place.
If you keep up with dark romance, this is one to keep an eye on.
For the moment, Carlton’s announcement is the only place to track it. No studio, producer, director, cast, release date, or creative direction has been made public.
