How does Ask Photos work, the new feature of Google Photos powered by Gemini?

If you have ever felt overwhelmed trying to find a photo among the thousands that populate your mobile gallery, don’t worry: the Ask Photos feature may be what you need. After being announced during the 2024 Google I/O, the company has now shared more information about what Ask Photos is capable of doing.

In essence, Ask Photos will allow us to find content more easily within our photos on Google Photos. Thanks to the use of artificial intelligence, we will be able to ask the application to show us specific things from our gallery. As Google explains, “instead of searching by typing keywords and scrolling through thousands of results, users will simply be able to ask for something, whether it’s a specific memory or a specific detail from a photo, and Ask Photos will find it“.

Advanced searches in Ask Photos are possible thanks to the capabilities of Gemini, as it takes into account the visual, text, and metadata (dates, places, etc). You can also correct Ask Photos if it makes a mistake with your search and indicate that it should take it into account for future conversations. Google explains that this is still an experimental option and will begin to be rolled out “shortly,” without specific dates.
