The iPhone 18 Pro went on sale in the US on Friday. First deliveries started arriving, and long lines formed outside Apple Fifth Avenue in New York. The launch also drew a protest from the Heat Initiative over Apple’s child-safety policies.
Before the 8 a.m. opening, the Heat Initiative ringed the Fifth Avenue store with six illuminated vans. The accusation was direct: Apple is enabling child sexual abuse and needs tougher safeguards across iCloud, the App Store, and iMessage. The group called for CSAM scanning, stricter age verification, stronger moderation, and better abuse reporting as Apple executives John Ternus, Deirdre O’Brien, and Greg Joswiak opened the store.
Apple hadn’t responded at the time, and the Heat Initiative didn’t release any statement beyond the protest itself.
If you follow Apple, the moment brought an old fight back into view, privacy versus child protection. Apple abandoned its 2021 NeuralHash CSAM plan after surveillance backlash. In 2023, the company reported 267 suspected CSAM cases to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, compared with Google’s 1.47 million and Meta’s 30 million, though Apple’s privacy model makes those numbers harder to compare directly.
And even with iOS 27 features like Ask to Browse and expanded Communication Safety tools for violent and sexual content, critics say turn them on themselves, they can still be bypassed, and the pressure on Apple hasn’t let up.
