Hideo Kojima, the acclaimed video game creator, clarified in a recent interview that his work, Metal Gear Solid 2, is not about artificial intelligence, as many interpretations have suggested, but rather focuses on the implications of digital society.
In statements to Wired Japan, Kojima explained that while the first Metal Gear Solid addressed the theme of DNA and the shift from analog to digital, the sequel reflects on how human life adapts to this new digital context.
“MGS2 is not about artificial intelligence, it is about how digital information can acquire a will of its own,” Kojima stated, suggesting that this dystopian reality he explored in his game is materializing.
AI is not the main focus in Metal Gear Solid
“24 years have passed and it has become a kind of reality. I did not predict it; it is rather a future I did not want, but unfortunately we are moving towards it,” he added.
In addition, the director of Death Stranding shared his thoughts on generative artificial intelligence, considering it a valuable tool that can enhance efficiency by taking care of repetitive tasks.
“I would like AI to take care of tedious tasks, allowing me to focus on creative work,” he stated, highlighting his intention to continue innovating in video game design.
Kojima also expressed his desire to explore new genres in the future, stating his interest in creating unconventional games, such as western or space titles. “I want to pioneer a new genre and not focus too much on the existing ones,” he concluded, hinting that his creative vision continues to evolve in the competitive world of video games.
