Is Spotlight still indexing on the iPhone? Apple offers us 3 solutions

With iOS 27, Spotlight takes on even greater importance than it already had, since the search feature creates a local index of our apps, files, messages, photos, contacts, and settings so we can find what we’re looking for more quickly and, most importantly, to power the new Siri AI. Given that the process can take quite a while, depending mainly on the amount of information, indexing already begins in iOS 26.6. Now, what can we do if it’s taking too long?

A local index that may require days

As reported by 9to5Mac, Apple explains that the initial indexing can require anywhere from hours to several days, depending on the information stored. Since the entire catalog stays private on your device at all times to protect your privacy, the work of downloading and reviewing takes much longer than if it were done on a cloud server where the data is already stored and processing power is greater.

Knowing that we’re going to want to try all the new Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27 as soon as it arrives in a few weeks, Apple has started indexing in iOS 26. Also, it points out three conditions that help indexing finish faster:

  • Keep the iPhone idle.
  • Keep the iPhone plugged in.
  • Keep the iPhone connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

So, an iPhone that’s plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi and isn’t being used will get through indexing much more quickly.

While indexing is underway, we’ll see a notice in the Settings app indicating that Search and Siri are still working. Mail may show a separate one for email. By following the recommendations above, sooner rather than later we’ll see the notice disappear and we’ll know that Spotlight is ready for iOS 27.
