Don’t be alarmed, but the next tablet from Google could be the last, as a new report indicates that the Google Pixel Tablet 3 project has been recently canceled.
That would mean that after the rumored Pixel Tablet 2, we are likely not to see a successor, which could be bad news for software support and optimization. However, with Google being responsible for both the hardware and software, it will surely come with long-term support, like the current Pixel 8 and 9.
Android Headlines reports that “multiple industry sources close to the project” have confirmed that the development of the Pixel Tablet 3—code-named Kiyomi—has been halted.
This is not the first time that Google has halted the development of its tablets, only to revive the project a couple of years later.
As with all rumors, these details should be taken with a grain of salt. There is a possibility that the leak is incorrect, or that the Tablet 3 will be reborn in a new form, but it reminds us that Google is no stranger to killing its projects.
With the Pixel 9 Pro Fold so advanced, a tablet loses its meaning
Since many tablets already look like large phones, Google might not see the advantage of continuing to work on a Pixel tablet, especially if it expects the foldable to eventually replace tablets.
Combine that with the fact that their foldable has been better received than their tablet, and that the tablet space has been dominated by Apple for a decade.
The only drawback for us is that Google’s tablet-type phone is not affordable. When a mid-range tablet is priced at $400–$500, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is now at $1800 euros. That is, almost four times the price.
We will have to wait to see what Google announces about it, but if they say goodbye to tablets, the foldables priced at almost $2,000 cannot be the solution for users who want an Android device with a large screen.
