It feels like forever since George RR Martin published A Game of Thrones, the first title in his originally planned A Song of Ice and Fire trilogy. Little did he expect that 30 years later he’d still be bogged down in finishing his saga (with fans having very little faith that it’ll happen) and with a TV franchise packed with series, video games, comics… and, now, movies.
Taking over the box office
Although some of us didn’t quite buy it when it was announced, the truth is that Warner is betting so heavily on the franchise, one of the few that keeps bringing them success, that it has already announced when the first cinematic spin-off, Aegon’s Conquest, will arrive. It will be June 6, 2029, which is still a long way off, but enough time to write it down and not make plans that day. Just in case.
We know the director will be Owen Harris (an expert in the saga thanks to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) and that it will deal with the conquest of Westeros by Aegon I, founder of the Targaryens. In other words, the ultimate A Game of Thrones prequel that still leaves the question of who’ll play Aegon, a character who has never appeared on screen.
This shows that Warner is all in on the saga. What’s more: House of the Dragon doesn’t have much longer to run, and it wouldn’t be surprising if they announced two or three more spin-offs next year. You have to milk the dragons for all they’re worth while there’s still some left.
