The John Wick saga is becoming one of Hollywood’s most successful. With four parts already released, each one has outperformed the previous one at the box office, and the release of the fourth has been even more powerful. John Wick 4 opened with $73.5 million in its first weekend in the U.S., making it a huge opening.
If we compare this figure with previous releases, its success becomes evident. The first John Wick opened with a modest $14 million, its sequel grossed $30.4 million and Parabellum made $56.8 million. Clearly, it’s a franchise that keeps outdoing itself, and people want more and more.
In terms of international box office, John Wick: Chapter 4 has grossed $64 million more, reaching a total sum of $137.5 million. Considering that the production cost $90 million to make, Lionsgate has already recouped its investment and is now all profit.
Also a critical success
But it has not only been a hit in terms of box office. With 95% favorable reviews on Rotten Tomatoes -equal to its number in public, also 95%-, the film has managed to conquer everyone. Although its long running time (169 minutes) made many wonder if it would hold up, the response could not have been more favorable.
Keanu Reeves is back in fashion and has managed to lead this great franchise, which has been slowly but surely making its way into the cinema. Now, with this great success, the only thing left to wonder is what’s next for John Wick?
John Wick 5… and much more…
Lionsgate has already announced that there will be a fifth installment of the saga -in fact, the initial intention was to shoot it together with 4, but COVID did not allow it-. In this new film, if we continue with what happened in the previous ones, it will explore what happens to Wick after what happens in John Wick 4.
There is still no shooting date and we don’t even know if the script is complete. But, if we take into account that the previous ones did not take too long to be released between them, we could be talking about a premiere in about two years. Of course, there will be no lack of desire.
In the meantime, we’ll still have more John Wick. Ballerina, the spin-off starring Ana de Armas, will premiere on schedule sometime in 2024. And The Continental, a series exclusive to Amazon Prime Video, is also in the works.
Still, there is one piece of bad news: Lance Reddick will not appear in the next in the saga. The actor died last March 17 due to “natural causes”, so we won’t be able to continue having him in the franchise.
