Episode 4 of the DC detective series Lanterns is streaming on HBO Max now, and it delivers the show’s biggest twist so far.
According to FlixPatrol, HBO Max’s eight-episode breakout Lanterns is now the streamer’s most-watched TV show worldwide. Its August 16, 2026 premiere reportedly drew more than 20 million viewers across the globe, and the audience has kept climbing week after week.
The episode’s major reveal involves Zoe Macon. Up to this point, she had been framed as John Stewart’s love interest and presumed dead after the satellite laser attack. Now she appears to be the Manhunter Hal Jordan and John Stewart have been tracking in Rushville, Nebraska.
Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, Lanterns approaches DC more like True Detective than a cosmic superhero story. Episode 4 leans even further into that idea, using the same kind of intimate betrayal that made HBO’s Sharp Objects hit as hard as it did.
Not everyone is fully on board with that combination. Some critics still think the show risks feeling torn between two identities, and some viewers suspect Zoe Macon’s unmasking may be a fake-out, since the season is only at its midpoint.
