LG disables McAfee pop-ups on Windows PCs: fix is rolling out

LG Electronics says it has updated the Windows software tied to its monitors. The change turns off the McAfee promo pop-ups some PCs were showing when certain LG displays were connected.

Those pop-ups came from LG Monitor App Installer, a companion app that gets delivered quietly through Windows Update and device metadata. Users had been reporting it across Reddit and YouTube, and Gamers Nexus documented it too: a recent update began listing McAfee as an “Additional App” and showing a 30-day trial ad, sometimes on nearly every boot.

Microsoft says it contacted LG Electronics after complaints spread across Reddit, YouTube, social media, and coverage from Gamers Nexus. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney also pushed the company on the issue. LG says McAfee itself is never installed unless you explicitly agree.

If you use an LG monitor with Windows, this is probably a fix you’ll want to pick up, even if it only removes the ad itself. It doesn’t change the bigger Windows setup that still lets hardware vendors push companion apps, and that brings up the same bloatware, privacy, and security concerns critics have also tied to Razer Synapse, Razer’s companion software.

The update should arrive through LG Electronics’ existing Windows distribution pipeline on affected PCs. Even so, LG Electronics and Microsoft still haven’t said how many users or models were involved, whether the rollout was regional, or what kind of deal existed with McAfee.
