Many games are free, but the Epic Games Store still doesn’t make a profit

The store director confirms in the trial that his company maintains against Google that the Epic Games Store is still not profitable.

It has been five years since it was launched for all players, but during this entire time, the Epic Games Store has not made a single euro in profit. This information was revealed by Steve Allison, the store’s director, during the lawsuit between Epic Games and Google.

In a recent session, Allison confirmed, as reported by The Verge, that the Epic Games Store is still not profitable. Thus, the store continues to incur losses, although the company’s goal is to gradually increase the number of players.

In this regard, Epic aims to capture half of all PC game sales revenue. The goal is ambitious and challenging, given that Valve’s Steam platform is the dominant player in the market. In fact, Epic continues to offer various promotions to attract developers and encourage them to publish their games on the platform, such as the option to provide 100% of the revenue during the initial months if certain conditions are met.

Despite Epic Games Store spending millions of dollars each year on free games, users still haven’t fully embraced the platform. In fact, it was recently reported that the company was growing below expectations, leading to the dismissal of around 900 employees for restructuring purposes.

Epic’s lawsuit against Google began in 2020 after they introduced a payment platform in Fortnite to bypass the Google Play Store. Since then, the legal battle continues, unlike the case against Apple, which has already been settled in favor of Apple.
