Meta acknowledges that it has gone too far in moderating content

Meta has publicly acknowledged that content moderation is not being carried out in the most appropriate way possible. Specifically, it refers to the error rates of automatic moderation, which remain “too high.”

Nick Clegg, president of global affairs at Meta, apologized this past Monday for the company’s high “error rates” and promised to “improve the precision and accuracy with which we act according to our standards,” according to The Verge.

The outlet includes some statements from Clegg, who explains that “we know that when it comes to enforcing our policies, our error rates remain too high […] Too often, harmless content is removed or restricted, and too many people are unfairly penalized.”

One of Meta’s most notorious moderation errors occurred a few months ago when its systems suppressed photos of now-President Donald Trump surviving the assassination attempt he suffered in Pennsylvania. Although Meta has not made any significant changes yet, it is likely that we will see major changes in content moderation in the coming months.
