Meta has a prototype of smart glasses that’s really scary

At a time when smart glasses are raising the biggest security concerns, we can look at the case of the new Solos and their curious Privacy Kit, Meta is, as far as we know, developing a new smart glasses prototype with “super-sensing” functions capable of recording each and every moment we experience. According to the Financial Times, Meta’s glasses take photos every few seconds and record audio constantly, then allowing us to ask the company’s artificial intelligence about any detail of what we’ve seen or heard. An idea that has its appeal, we have to admit, but that raises very important questions about our privacy.

A complete record of our day-to-day

As far as we know, instead of directly storing the recordings, Meta would extract the metadata from the photos and the audio to upload it to its servers and analyze it with AI. That way we could ask the system to remind us where we left the keys or what they told us in a meeting. This approach, according to those behind it, reduces the impact on privacy, although the idea of having a device constantly recording doesn’t go away. Especially when you consider what kind of metadata is collected and where it is processed before ending up on Meta’s servers.

On top of that, the company is considering using the information collected to train its artificial intelligence models and improve its services. Google, which doesn’t even remotely collect information so exhaustively, is already making headlines by using our information to train its AI, so Meta’s intention isn’t something we can take lightly.

Anything else? Although it’s still a prototype, the Financial Times says that Meta has presented a system capable of analyzing our emotions based on voice, gestures, and context. The potential is enormous and promises more interactive experiences, although the idea of being under constant observation is, to put it bluntly, quite scary.
