Back in 2018, Michael Douglas was predicting a Democratic “massacre” in the U.S. midterm elections, the kind of result that would cut into President Donald Trump’s power in Washington. He said Trump had worn voters down with the same promises and the same rhetoric, argued that even parts of the Midwest seemed to be moving, and stepped right into the broader 2018 “blue wave” argument over healthcare, immigration, and the more combative tone politics had taken on.
Douglas also said the U.S. Congress would “obviously change hands.” He even floated a Democratic Senate takeover, despite the difficult map, because that would mean subpoenas, renewed investigations into corruption and cronyism, and more oversight, though he also argued that Democrats should start with affordability and other cost-of-living concerns.
What happened was a little more mixed. Democrats flipped 41 House seats and took back the House for the first time in eight years, but Republicans held the Senate and expanded their majority to 53 seats, so the backlash to Donald Trump was real, just not absolute.
For people who follow celebrity activism, the remark still stands out. You can put it next to Oprah Winfrey, Taylor Swift, and Rihanna as one more memorable case of Hollywood’s Trump-era intensity running into an electorate that was energized, polarized, and split.
