If something good has come out of the FTC’s lawsuit against Microsoft over the purchase of Activision Blizzard, it’s this: a vast amount of insider information that is slowly trickling into the press. Phil Spencer may not be pleased, but we can’t let this opportunity pass.
Microsoft is planning to revamp its Xbox Series X console in 2024 with a completely new design and features. With the codename Brooklin, the unannounced console refresh has been accidentally revealed in new FTC documents against Microsoft this week.
The design of the new Xbox Series X is much more circular than the current console and will be marketed without a disc drive. Internal confidential documents from Microsoft reveal it has 2TB of storage, a front-facing USB-C port with power delivery, and a “completely new and more immersive controller.”
A revolutionary controller and an enhancement to the Series X
The new controller, codenamed Sebille, will be announced later this year and will include an accelerometer for gyroscopic support. It features a two-tone color scheme and will be compatible with direct cloud connection, Bluetooth 5.2, and a presumably upgraded “Xbox Wireless 2” connection.
Microsoft also mentions “precision haptic feedback” and “dual-purpose VCA haptics as speakers” as specifications for the controller. It will also have quieter buttons and thumbsticks, a rechargeable and interchangeable battery, modular thumbsticks, and the ability to lift it to wake it up.
As for the design of the new Xbox Series X, Microsoft is also adding support for Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and reducing the existing die to 6nm “to improve efficiency.” The power supply’s output will be reduced by 15%, according to Microsoft’s document.
Microsoft aims to launch it at the same price point of $499 as the Xbox Series X.
Microsoft unveils a roadmap for this new Xbox Series X console and controller, along with a refreshed Xbox Series S with 1 TB of storage. In the roadmap, we can see that Xbox’s plan is to release the next generation by 2028.
Microsoft has recently released a refreshed Xbox Series S in black, but there could be another update coming in 2024 with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 support. It will also include this new Xbox controller.
