Obsidian Entertainment has been working intensively on its new project, Avowed, for over six years, marking a significant return to the Pillars of Eternity universe. This title, which was released just a few days ago, has received approval from Microsoft and has generated considerable anticipation among players, although the reviews have been mixed within the community. Avowed is designed exclusively for Xbox Series on consoles and promises a vast map of 256 kilometers optimized to provide an immersive experience.
The director of RPG, Carrie Patel, has opened the door to future expansions or sequels. In a recent interview, Patel mentioned that the team is interested in continuing to develop content within the world of Avowed, keeping all options open regarding possible DLCs. Now that we have built this wonderful world and also developed the strength of the team, I would love to do more with it, she stated, reflecting the studio’s intention to extend the story and mechanics of the game.
The development of Avowed has undergone several significant changes since its inception. Originally conceived as an open-world experience similar to Skyrim, this approach was adjusted after Patel’s arrival in 2021, opting for a design of large interconnected zones. According to Patel, this decision was based on the studio’s experience with The Outer Worlds, allowing for the creation of more varied environments and providing a more satisfying progression for players. Building a game with open zones allows us to design areas with greater intention and detail, he explained.
With Avowed, Obsidian reaffirms its commitment to the creation of rich and detailed worlds, keeping expectations high in a competitive environment where innovation and storytelling are key. Players are eagerly awaiting more information about this title that promises to reintegrate its essence into the Pillars of Eternity universe.

The latest February update for Xbox Series X/S consoles has begun to roll out, bringing significant features and improvements to the user experience. One of the most notable new features is access to Xbox Cloud Gaming (in beta) for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members, allowing players to invite others to their gaming sessions through browsers on compatible TVs.
Users can now generate invitation links from the game menu or the guide and share them with friends, facilitating online collaboration. This feature could transform the way players connect, making it more accessible and straightforward.
In addition, the update introduces new games to the Xbox Game Pass catalog. Titles like Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered have been recently added, with the promise that more games will join in the near future. Upcoming titles include games like Cult of the Lamb, Neva, Hotline Miami, and Atomic Heart, further expanding the options available for subscribers.
This update also includes an improvement in the quality of the gaming experience, thanks to a new network quality indicator for cloud gaming. This feature, which was introduced in the January update, allows players to assess the stability of their connection while enjoying their favorite titles. Additionally, a firmware update for the Xbox Wireless controller has been released, ensuring that players’ hardware operates at its maximum capacity.
In summary, the February Xbox update not only brings new features and titles to the service, but also improves connectivity and overall performance, inviting players to explore and enjoy the Xbox ecosystem more.

Subscribers of Xbox Game Pass are going to have a very good Christmas. While last Tuesday Microsoft announced the first additions for the month, a few days later we know that two new games will also arrive that were not on the initial list and will be available to all users subscribed to the Ultimate and PC levels.
Among the already confirmed titles, Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, available since December 4, stands out, along with the recent Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which joins the catalog this Monday, December 9. Additionally, Wildfrost will make its debut the following day, December 10, consolidating a start of the month full of new releases for Game Pass subscribers.
What no one expected was the arrival of For the King 2 and Hunt: Showdown 1896 to the service on December 12. For the King 2 is a turn-based strategy roguelite that simulates tabletop role-playing games and enjoys “Very Positive” general reviews on Steam. On the other hand, Hunt: Showdown 1896, an enhanced version of Crytek’s extraction shooter, was already available for free trial through Game Pass, but now it is being permanently added.
The impact of these new additions is greater considering that some titles for January 2025 had already been announced. Among these are Carrion on January 2 and Road 96 on the 7th, two games returning after previously being removed from the service. Eternal Strands will also arrive on January 28, Sniper Elite: Resistance on the 30th, and Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector on the 31st, expanding the offerings for the start of the year.
However, it is important to remember that most of the launch games available in the catalog from day one are now reserved for the Ultimate and PC levels, so if you are on the Standard level, you will need to upgrade your subscription.

A few weeks ago, Sarah Bond, President of Xbox after the company’s merger with Activision / Blizzard, said that in November “players will be able to play and purchase Xbox games directly from the Xbox app on Android.” We are almost in December and the feature is still not available, but Bond says it is not Microsoft’s fault.
The problem, according to her, is that Microsoft will only be able to do so when a court order comes into effect that requires radical changes to Google’s Play Store on Android, such as opening it to competition and ending the requirement for apps to use Google Play Billing.
3/4: Due to a temporary administrative stay recently granted by the courts, we are currently unable to launch these features as planned. Our team has the functionality built and ready to go live as soon as the court makes a final decision.
On October 18, Judge James Donato granted Google’s request to suspend the process while appeals its ruling that the Android app store is an illegal monopoly, which could leave things hanging by a thread for quite some time.
Sarah Bond has referred to it in a Bluesky thread today, writing: “Due to a recently granted temporary administrative suspension by the courts, we are currently unable to launch these features as planned. Our team has the functionality built and ready to go live as soon as the court makes a final decision.”
After the publication of this message, Google’s spokesperson, Dan Jackson, responded with the same statement that the company had issued several weeks ago. This is how Google defends itself against these Xbox statements:
“Microsoft has always been able to offer its Android users the ability to play and purchase Xbox games directly from its app, it has simply chosen not to do so. Microsoft, like Epic, is ignoring these very real security issues. We remain focused on supporting an ecosystem that works for everyone, not just for two of the largest gaming companies,” explains the spokesperson.
Microsoft has been planning its mobile app store strategy for years. However, frustrating as it may be for players, the company has yet to explicitly state which aspects of the situation prevent it from offering Xbox game purchases as Steam and PlayStation already do. It’s as if they don’t want to pay Google’s commission on Android, but don’t mind doing so on Steam, Xbox, or Nintendo platforms.
Surely you remember World of Warcraft: Classic, Blizzard’s attempt to attract all those players who got hooked on the game in its early days. As multiplayer games age, more and more are adopting “classic” or “original” modes that bring back the feel and balance of the game in its early days, when they achieved true success. In 2024, we are in the middle of a Fortnite season that returns the battle royale to how it was in Chapter 2, and in December, Fortnite OG will return as a dedicated mode. In 2024 we are in the middle of a Fortnite season that brings the battle royale back to how it was in chapter 2, and in December, Fortnite OG will return as a dedicated mode. Meanwhile, Overwatch: Classic is running as a limited-time mode to reminisce about the good times of Blizzard’s hero shooter.
A game that embraces nostalgia may seem paradoxical, but it’s not that surprising. Just as single-player games and series evolve with each new entry, live service games like Fortnite and Overwatch grow with each new season, update, or balance change.
Players long for gaming experiences that evoke nostalgia, and by now it has been seven to eight years since the beginnings of Fortnite and Overwatch. As more live service games continue for longer periods, it is expected that this practice will become increasingly common.
THIS. IS. NOT. A. DRILL.
OG is coming BACK and is here to stay. Relive Battle Royale from the start and explore the OG map, collect OG loot, and relive OG seasons. Drop back in on December 6. pic.twitter.com/Zpg1CrItS5
As they lose players, online games embrace their origins
When it was launched in 2016, Overwatch took the world by storm. It perfected the hero shooter formula and gave Blizzard its first breath of fresh air in decades.
Overwatch also jumped on the live service trend as it gained momentum and became the golden goose that all AAA game companies tried to chase. The game evolved over time with new heroes, maps, modes, and mechanics, but there was something truly magical about the early days of Overwatch.
For its part, Fortnite took advantage of the popularity of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in 2017 with an experimental battle royale mode. Although initially it was a secondary mode with low expectations, Fortnite: Battle Royale revolutionized the gaming industry and became a trendsetter, everyone wanted to be Fortnite. Both Overwatch and Fortnite have drastically evolved from their humble beginnings.
We have seen how the support for Overwatch slowed down until it disappeared, the creation and collapse of the Overwatch League, and its disappointing transition to Overwatch 2.
We have seen multiple chapters of Fortnite with unique maps, modes, mechanics, and outfits, in addition to the expansion of Fortnite as a hub for other games. Although you may have had the same game client installed on your PC for years, there’s no denying that the version of Overwatch or Fortnite you launch today is very different from the one we launched in 2017. This creates a feeling of nostalgia for the early days of these titles that can be leveraged to obtain content.
Nostalgia is a trap, as it tries to take us back to a time already past, but it works
Part of the appeal of live service games is their constantly evolving nature. Players have reasons to return to the game day after day and may find drastic changes or content additions when they log in. This maintains balance and freshness, and creates distinct eras in the games that people remember fondly.
Those memories foster nostalgia, and catering to that nostalgia is a smart way for a developer looking for ways to regain goodwill or bring players back.
For a game like Overwatch 2, with many controversial changes, something like Overwatch: Classic is a safe bet with a proven track record of success.
For Epic Games, Fortnite OG is a calculated way to highlight how Fortnite can serve as a hub for various different versions of the same game and potentially bring back people who haven’t picked up the game since 2017.
For live service games that constantly need to find new ways to bring back players who no longer play and keep current ones constantly engaged, diving back into older content is not a bad idea. There is already a proven history of content returning and being embraced by fans. Reintroducing that content can be a more significant announcement for old players than a new season, and these limited-time modes or shorter seasons can give developers a break while they work on new content.
Players also attend these launches. The initial launch of Fortnite OG led to the highest number of daily players in the game’s history, so it makes sense for Epic Games to revisit the concept, and for those responsible for games like Overwatch 2 to take note and respond accordingly.
But a warning to developers: nostalgia hooks for a while, be careful that your “return to the origins” is not the swan song after which your game closes.

Among them are the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S, as well as other less conventional options like a Samsung Smart TV, an Amazon Fire TV Stick, a mobile phone, the Meta Quest 3 virtual reality glasses and much more.
According to the company, the campaign “invites people to play with Xbox across multiple devices and screens” and “shows the evolution of Xbox as a platform that extends across devices.”
If you have a screen, you have an Xbox
The campaign follows a wave of efforts to make Xbox titles playable on a wide range of platforms. Xbox Cloud Gaming is available on most PCs, while the Xbox TV app and Game Pass Ultimate were made accessible through Amazon’s Fire TV Sticks earlier this year.
The reception of the announcements has been somewhat mixed so far, with some comments feeling that it strays too far from the brand’s core identity.
We believe it is a quite effective campaign. For some time now, the Xbox brand has been evolving towards a more software-focused business model, driven in part by the decision to release more Xbox games on other platforms.
The option to access the latest Xbox games through a low-cost piece of hardware like a Fire TV Stick could be very appealing to more casual gamers. It also helps reduce the financial barriers associated with the need to purchase a full console, which can only be positive.

Discover what time you can start playing Season 1 in Warzone and Black Ops 6, as well as how much storage space you’ll need for the update that is about to arrive (specifically on November 14).
Black Ops 6 has had a very strong launch. During the launch week, the game achieved more simultaneous players on Steam than any other installment of the franchise since 2022.
It is also the first Call of Duty game to arrive on GamePass, which has opened new avenues for Xbox and PC subscribers to play without having to pay for the game. Despite this, Black Ops 6 has managed to sell a lot on PlayStation.
And Season 1 of Black Ops 6, arriving this week, aims to give even more to the players. Here is everything you need to know about the arrival of Season 1 for Warzone and Black Ops 6, including the release date and time, and what new content you can expect to see when the update arrives.
What is the release date and time for Season 1 of Warzone for Black Ops 6?
The new season will release new content for both the Warzone battle royale and Black Ops 6 simultaneously when it is published on Thursday, November 14. In Europe, it will be released from 6 PM and in the US, it will arrive early in the morning, as the launch is simultaneous.
Of course, you will have to download a fairly substantial update if you want to jump into the new maps with your new weapons in hand. While PC players will be able to download the update in advance, console players will only have access to the patch a few hours before its release.
A wired connection is a safe bet for running and shooting when Season 1 arrives, but even if you have a solid broadband connection, you’re probably wondering how much system space this new update will consume.
OFICIAL: Hoja de ruta con el contenido de la temporada 1 de #BlackOps6 x #Warzone.
How much space does the Season 1 update file for Warzone for Black Ops 6 take up?
The Season 1 update file is quite substantial, as it adds nearly 50 GB in total between both Call of Duty experiences. More specifically, Black Ops 6 players will need to download a 35 GB update, while Warzone players will face an additional 10 GB update.
Season 1 increases the total file size of Call of Duty Black Ops 6 to 90 GB, an amount that is average for games currently.
#BlackOps6 Season 1 has MASSIVE appreciation for Black Ops 4…
Although the integration of Black Ops 6 into Warzone is the main part of the Season 1 launch, the main title is not being neglected. New maps, modes, weapons, and much more will make their debut during the upcoming season.
The new season will launch with three new multiplayer maps: Hideout, Heirloom, and Extraction; another map, Racket, will be added mid-season. A holiday version of Nuketown and Hacienda from Black Ops 4 will also return at some point during the season.
New multiplayer game modes will also be added. In a new 6v6 mode called Ransack, players will fight to collect gold bars throughout the map and bring them back to a stash in the spawn area. To win, players will need to store new gold bars, defend their own stash, and raid the enemy’s spawn point to reclaim their loot.
The fans’ favorite hide-and-seek mode, Prop Hunt, also returns mid-season, and other limited-time modes are promised in the future.
Ranked matches will also be available in the launch window, allowing players to compete to earn SR in competitive matches in game modes like Control, Hardpoint, and Search and Destroy. Playing in ranked modes will allow players to earn exclusive operator skins for their Rogue Black Ops and Crimson One teams based on the amount of SR they accumulate throughout the season.
The new additions to the equipment will also increase the arsenal with which players can work. Seven new weapons will be added throughout the battle pass and seasonal events: the Krig C assault rifle, the Saug SMG, the Maelstrom shotgun, the AMR Mod 4 sniper rifle, the Sirin 9 mm special weapon, and the melee weapons blade and electric drill will be available at the end of the season.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has witnessed a fantastic launch, probably the most successful installment of the franchise. And now we know why: it captured the attention of more than half of the American Xbox Series S/X players, which is a few million players.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has managed to leave behind all the issues we had with Activision and its partners regarding their vision of the franchise, as the new installment has managed to break all previous records and the path now seems clear.
During the recent Microsoft earnings presentation, Satya Nadella, the company’s CEO, confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has set new franchise records and has been described as the “biggest” launch in the Call of Duty series.
According to Circana's Player Engagement Tracker, on Oct 23rd, 19% of US active Xbox Series players and 18% of US active PlayStation 5 players launched Call of Duty HQ.
On October 28th, 52% of active XBS players and 34% of active PS5 players did so. Both were all-time highs for Call of Duty HQ.
Half of Xbox users have already played CoD and things are going very well on PS5
Based on an analysis by Circana’s CEO and analyst, Mat Piscatella, we now know that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has managed to capture the attention of “one in every two Xbox Series S/X players,” which is undoubtedly a huge achievement for the franchise, given that the inclusion of Game Pass has surely worked for Activision and its partners.
“According to Circana’s Player Engagement Tracker, on October 23, 19% of active Xbox Series players and 18% of active PlayStation 5 players in the United States launched Call of Duty HQ. On October 28, 52% of active XBS players and 34% of active PS5 players did so. Both were all-time highs for Call of Duty HQ,” reads Picatella’s message on Bluesky.
Circana US Player Engagement Tracker – Top 15 Titles by Total Weekly US Players (Not Concurrent) – W/E Oct 26, 2024
– 47% of active Xbox Series players engaged with Call of Duty HQ during the week, up from 26% the week prior.
– Call of Duty HQ ranked at #4 on Steam, after placing 27th LW.
Despite Xbox users having an advantage with Game Pass, PlayStation users did not fall behind at all, as a third of the active PS5 consumer base played the title, demonstrating that Activision is receiving love from all platforms.
Not only in the United States, also in the United Kingdom, where the title has achieved the highest traffic in history for a game and, although we haven’t seen any metrics, the indicators clearly show that the cumulative player count is going to be historic.
Undoubtedly, it is exciting to see how the Call of Duty franchise is back in full swing, and the Xbox-Activision partnership has catalyzed the increase in the number of players thanks to the ease of access to the title through Game Pass. A winning policy.
One of the good things about the gaming sector in the United Kingdom is that, for decades, physical sales of video games have been published. This makes it easy to see how well releases are doing when there is no official data from the companies. And since the United Kingdom is one of the strongest markets in terms of sales, it is usually a good indicator to know how well a specific game is selling. By the way, in Japan, they also publish this data (there, they even publish the number of consoles sold each week). The […]

The game that was released last Friday and has everyone interested is Black Ops 6, the new Call of Duty from Activision, which for the first time is launching on the Xbox Game Pass service. Has its arrival on Xbox’s subscription service affected the game’s sales? Here’s what we know.
Ok, UK physical sales are in for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (GfK). Launch sales are 10% lower compared with Modern Warfare 3. This is almost entirely due to a drop in sales on Xbox, which was inevitable with Game Pass. PS5 sales remain steady year-on-year. Digital data to come
Very good sales, despite the obvious drop due to Game Pass
As noted on Twitter by Chris Dring, editor of Games Industry, the physical sales of Black Ops 6 during the launch weekend are 10% lower than those of Modern Warfare 3 last year.
Dring points out that the drop in sales is “almost entirely due to a decline in Xbox sales,” suggesting that this “was inevitable with Game Pass.” Clearly, Xbox players who already enjoy Game Pass were not going to buy Black Ops 6 when it was included in the service.
Black Ops 6 was the first Call of Duty game available on Xbox Game Pass on the same day of its release, following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 peaks at 306,000+ concurrent players on Steam for its launch weekend.
This is the highest playercount in about 2 years since the initial relaunch on Steam in 2022.
BO6 is having a bigger launch than MW3 while also being available on Xbox Game Pass. pic.twitter.com/e7nMStdh7v
Dring also points out that “sales on PlayStation 5 remain stable year after year,” suggesting that, at least in terms of physical sales in the UK, the fact that Call of Duty is now an Xbox brand has had no apparent influence on its popularity on PS5.
The digital data is yet to come, which will shed more light on the situation and reveal to what extent Xbox Game Pass has affected sales of the Xbox Series X/S version. The world holds its breath as it seems the game is performing very well.
The reality is clear and harsh for Xbox. After almost five years of Game Pass, their service has far fewer customers than they anticipated when they presented their estimates to the board. Xbox thought that by the end of the decade they would have 100 million active subscribers, and the reality is very different, especially because in three years they have barely grown. The reality is clear and harsh for Xbox. After almost five years of Game Pass, their service has far fewer customers than they anticipated when they presented their estimates to the management. Xbox thought that by the end of the decade they would have 100 million active subscribers and the reality is very different, especially because in three years they have barely grown.
To turn the tables, Microsoft gave the green light to the purchase of Activision Blizzard, with what it meant for Game Pass: Call of Duty, Diablo, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, etc. For that reason, we do not understand the move that concerns us today.
Microsoft has removed the one euro trial version of Xbox Game Pass (one dollar in the U.S.), just days before the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on October 25.
Just ahead of Black Ops 6's launch next week, Microsoft has removed the option to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass for $1 for 14 days.
Now, there's no free trial available. Just full price subscription per month. pic.twitter.com/zpJSR95dXB
If you want to play, pay for the full month says Xbox
The 14-day trial version of Game Pass was withdrawn on October 8th, preventing users from subscribing to the trial version and playing the Black Ops 6 campaign without having to pay for a full month of Game Pass. That is, on PC it costs 12 euros if we choose the cheapest rate and 18 euros for the Ultimate.
In March of last year, Microsoft suspended the one-dollar trial period for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass for the first time, before reinstating it and reducing it to 14 days instead of a full month. Subsequently, Xbox briefly removed the one-dollar trial a few days before the debut of Starfield in September.
It’s not surprising that the $1 trial version of Xbox Game Pass has been removed again, especially since Microsoft hopes that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will increase the number of Game Pass subscribers.
For months Microsoft has been debating whether to include the new versions of Call of Duty in Game Pass, with some company members concerned that the revenue generated by typical Call of Duty sales would be undermined by Game Pass.
A one-dollar trial would undoubtedly reduce sales and subscriptions, especially when Activision traditionally sells more than 20 million copies of Call of Duty on average, at about 70 dollars each.
Microsoft also plans to bring Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III, and Warzone to Xbox Cloud Gaming at the end of this month. Here comes the litmus test for Xbox: will their big bet work?
