Playstack, the developers of Mortal Shell 2, have announced that they want to support physical releases now that it seems especially vulnerable. Announcing a limited physical edition of their game, called the Revered Edition, they’ve had to make a new announcement on social media. The reason is that interest in a physical edition of the game has far exceeded their expectations, and there won’t be enough copies available at launch.
A physical release that has been a smash hit
They stated that “because the release date of Mortal Shell II is August 20, and because of the manufacturing time needed to replenish stock, it is very unlikely that there will be additional physical copies available before the game’s launch”. They also stressed that “”we are working with our distribution partner to review current demand and will inform you as soon as we know what the next steps are. To be clear, there is no guarantee of a restocking plan after launch, since this decision is not up to us”.
They wanted to make it clear that they’d like everyone to be able to get a physical copy, but that they can’t promise it. Especially since, from the start, it was sold as a limited release.
This comes as Sony, maker of the PlayStation 5, the console for which the game is being released physically as an exclusive —although it is also being released, digitally, on PC—, have stated that they intend to phase out physical media on their consoles. This shows how their decisions are not in line with their users’ buying habits. Something that, probably, PlayStack did not know before announcing and seeing the tremendous success of this physical edition.
