Netflix has brought back Sense8, the sci-fi drama it canceled after season 2, and this time it gets a two-hour finale that finally gives the story some closure. For a streaming show, it’s one of the clearest examples of fans actually getting a win.
The anger over that 2017 cancellation was easy to understand. Netflix had left Wolfgang captured, with the larger story still hanging, and fans didn’t just complain online for a day and move on. They organized a global campaign: a Change.org petition that passed 500,000 signatures, hashtag pushes under #BringBackSense8 and #RenewSense8, letters, phone calls, even direct appeals to Netflix executives. That pressure helped get the Sense8 finale made, even though the show was, plainly, too expensive for the size of its audience.
You can also see why Netflix hesitated. Lana and Lilly Wachowski, along with J. Michael Straczynski, made a series that was unusually ambitious from the start: eight mentally linked strangers, shot in real cities across multiple countries, on a scale most shows don’t even attempt. Season 2 reportedly cost around $9 million per episode.
And if you care about Netflix originals that feel distinct, the finale is still worth your time. Sense8 blended sci-fi, action, romance, and thriller elements with a larger idea about empathy, and it earned praise for its LGBTQ+ representation, including Jamie Clayton playing a transgender character. It also won a GLAAD Media Award. At the same time, the show wasn’t above criticism, with some viewers calling out stereotypes, a U.S.-centric perspective, and the thinner treatment given to certain non-white characters.
