2024 has brought bad news for fans of ’90s nostalgia. Netflix has decided to cancel That ‘90s Show (Those Wonderful ’90s), the spin-off of the successful That ‘70s Show, after only two seasons on its platform. The news has been confirmed by Kurtwood Smith, who played the beloved and grumpy grandfather Red Forman, through a post on Instagram.
“I know many have been asking me when season 3 will arrive, but I have bad news… Netflix will not renew it. I have enjoyed every minute bringing Grandpa Red to life for all of you. This show had so much heart behind it, and the cast, writers, directors, producers, and crew were the most wonderful people an actor could hope to work with. But we’re not going to be fools… we’re going to sell the show, because good grandparents would work hard to make sure these kids graduate from high school.”
Those not-so-wonderful 90s
That ‘90s Show premiered in January 2023, set two decades after the events of That ‘70s Show. In this new version, the plot followed Leia Forman, daughter of Eric and Donna, who spent the summer at her grandparents Red and Kitty Forman’s house. The series maintained the essence of the original, with Leia and her friends frequenting the famous basement where previous generations of teenagers forged their friendships.

Despite a promising start with a first season of 10 episodes, the second season, which was split into two parts and totaled 16 episodes, failed to reach the expected audience ratings. This has led Netflix to decide not to renew it for a third season. However, fans are still hopeful that That ’90s Show might find a new home on another platform, as has happened with similar productions in the past.
