It’s easy to appreciate the significance of a particular cultural work through its enduring presence over time. When it influences other works, inspires derivatives, and people continue to revisit it long after its natural lifespan, we’re dealing with something that, for one reason or another, resonates with individuals. It holds a certain artistic importance. And undoubtedly, Scott Pilgrim must possess some of that.
After announcing it last March, we knew that Netflix was creating an anime adaptation of Scott Pilgrim. With the entire cast from Edgar Wright’s film reprising their roles as voice actors, we had barely seen anything of this promising new anime. Until now.
Netflix has premiered the first trailer for the Scott Pilgrim anime, giving it a release date much closer than we might have expected: November 17th. Titled “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” with a script by Bryan Lee O’Malley and Ben David Grabinski, the studio behind its development is the legendary Science Saru studio of Masaaki Yuasa, famous for works like “Ping Pong: The Animation” and “Devilman Crybaby.” The music will be handled by Anamanaguchi, and the series will be directed by Abel Góngora, a Spanish director who previously worked on directing the episode “T0-B1” in the animated anthology “Star Wars: Visions.”
Scott Pilgrim is a comic book series published between 2004 and 2010 by Bryan Lee O’Malley, heavily influenced by manga, following the romance between the titular character Scott Pilgrim and the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers. Its popularity led to a film adaptation in 2010 by Edgar Wright titled “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” and in the same year, a video game adaptation was released under the name “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game.”
With Science Saru behind the anime, we can expect a high-quality series, especially considering the fantastic trailer they have presented. However, we will have to wait until November 17th to see if Scott Pilgrim continues to captivate audiences in the same way it did ten years ago.
