Harbinger, the electric box van specialist, has unveiled an innovative Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) medium-duty van that promises to change the landscape for commercial fleets hesitant to shift to full electrification.
Marrying a substantial battery with a compact gasoline engine, this new offering achieves an impressive autonomy of up to 500 miles on a single charge and a full tank, potentially alleviating range anxiety for fleet operators.
With a recent $100 million funding boost, Harbinger aims to bring a cost-competitive EREV chassis to market.

This vehicle combines a low-emission 1.4L inline four-cylinder gas engine with an integrated 800V generator to power a choice of 140 or 175 kW batteries.
According to John Harris, Co-founder and CEO of Harbinger, the diverse applications of medium-duty vehicles demand solutions that go beyond what fully electric systems can offer. “Our hybrid is designed for use cases and routes that go beyond what an all-electric system typically supports,” he stated.
The new chassis delivers robust performance with 440 horsepower and a staggering 1,140 lb-ft of torque, allowing for quick acceleration and a smooth ride even under heavy loads. Fleet managers will also appreciate the efficient charging capability, which can recharge the battery from 10% to 80% in under an hour at a 150 kW charging station.
Key components of the van, including its batteries, are supplied by Panasonic, ensuring quality and reliability for potential buyers. As the medium-duty truck segment expands, Harbinger is well-positioned to meet the needs of diverse operators who may not find all-electric vehicles suitable for their operational demands.
The introduction of such innovative technology highlights the shifting dynamics within the commercial vehicle market, as brands adapt to evolving environmental standards and fleet requirements.
