Nintendo issues new GitHub takedowns: 400-plus Switch emulator repos removed

Nintendo filed seven DMCA anti-circumvention notices on GitHub in a single day in August 2026, at least going by the notices themselves. The result was the removal of more than 400 Nintendo Switch emulator repositories from GitHub, the latest step in Nintendo’s crackdown after Yuzu.

Suyu took the biggest hit. The community successor to Yuzu lost 311 repositories, according to the notices. Nintendo also targeted 29 Skyline repositories, along with a mix of Yuzu forks, smaller projects, mirrors, archived code, and even inactive repos. In those notices, Nintendo argues that these projects depend on unauthorized cryptographic keys to get around Nintendo Switch protections and decrypt games. That’s a legal case built around anti-circumvention rules, not emulation on its own, even though U.S. law still hasn’t fully settled where lawful emulation ends and unlawful circumvention begins. A lot of those fights never get that far. They end in takedowns, settlements, or outright shutdowns.

If you follow Nintendo Switch emulation, this move fits the pattern Nintendo has established since the 2024 Yuzu lawsuit and the $2.4 million settlement that followed. It also shows how fast new forks and successor projects can get dragged into the same whack-a-mole enforcement cycle.

Critics still argue that emulation can support homebrew, legally owned games played on other hardware, and software preservation.

All of the affected repositories were on GitHub, where Nintendo has already pushed for other removals earlier in 2026.
