Nissan has officially unveiled the third generation of its iconic LEAF electric vehicle, transitioning from a traditional hatchback design to a stylish crossover.
This new iteration promises significant updates, notably an impressive range of up to 373 miles (600 km), made possible by the advanced CMF-EV platform that it shares with the Ariya SUV.
The reimagined LEAF aims to reclaim its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
The new Nissan LEAF will feature a new 3-in-1 EV powertrain
One of the most exciting features of the new LEAF is its integration of a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, allowing owners to utilize Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network. This strategic upgrade is expected to enhance the LEAF’s appeal to American consumers amidst increasing competition from other EV manufacturers.
Nissan plans to introduce the new LEAF to the U.S. and Canadian markets by the end of this year, joining the recently released Ariya electric SUV. The launch is part of a broader initiative from Nissan and its luxury division Infiniti, which includes plans for the debut of ten new and refreshed models, reinforcing the company’s commitment to electric mobility.
While details remain sparse, vehicle programs chief Francois Bailly indicated that the LEAF will feature a new 3-in-1 EV powertrain, catering to varied driver needs. In addition to enhanced range, the updated model will offer new features like 19-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic moonroof, further enhancing its family-friendly appeal.
Looking ahead, Nissan has ambitious plans for its electric lineup, including an “adventure-focused” electric SUV set for production at its Canton, Mississippi plant and a luxury Infiniti electric SUV anticipated by 2028. In European markets, the next-generation LEAF will be joined by the Micra EV city car and the Qashqai crossover, with the new Nissan Juke EV set to arrive next year.
