One of the most important directors in Netflix history leaves the streamer for Warner

In 2017, Noah Baumbach released his first film with Netflix: The Meyerowitz Stories. It was a critical and audience hit and helped him make the next one, Marriage Story, which earned 6 Oscar nominations. Then came White Noise, which didn’t make much of an impact, and finally Jay Kelly, which was a major flop. And after four films and almost a decade, the filmmaker has finally parted ways with the streamer: he’s found a new home.

From Tu-dum to Warner

In 2027, Baumbach will sign a new contract with Warner, and he’s already preparing his first film with them, which he’ll write, produce, and direct, although all we know is that it will be about two New York college students. For now he’s only signed three years of exclusivity, but we already know how these things work.

If there’s one thing the director is going to get back after his time at Netflix, it’s something as basic as being able to release his films in theaters, even though the streamer is making efforts to keep its movies on the big screen longer before they get to home screens. But maybe the most interesting thing about this deal is that Baumbach has signed with an indie studio within Warner that hasn’t released anything yet, called Clockwork.

Clockwork will have under its belt Sean Baker’s new film after Anora, Ti Amo!, as well as the new movie with Jenna Ortega and Rose Byrne. Next year, supposedly, we’ll be finding out more, but if it’s attracted Baumbach, then at the very least it promises plenty of originality and quality filmmaking. We’ll see.
