OpenAI has now said it plainly: ChatGPT hardware is on the way, and it won’t be limited to a single gadget. Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president, didn’t offer names, prices, or release dates, but industry reports are already circling two possible products, a screenless portable speaker and an “agent phone.”
That fits the bigger picture Brockman seems to be sketching out. OpenAI doesn’t look like it’s making a one-off device. It looks like it’s trying to build a broader ChatGPT ecosystem. The Jony Ive connection gives that idea more weight. Ive spent years shaping Apple’s design language, OpenAI is already working with him, and it has also acquired io Products, his firm.
Brockman also made one thing pretty clear: voice sits at the center of this plan. His case was straightforward. Speaking feels more natural than typing. That helps explain why OpenAI’s hardware may lean harder on spoken interaction than on big screens. He even pointed to soundproof office masks as evidence that people may want voice-first computing in shared spaces, which is an odd detail, but a memorable one.
If you follow AI hardware, this is worth watching. Still, there are plenty of caveats hanging over it: Apple’s trade-secret lawsuit, Brockman’s response that OpenAI has no interest in other companies’ secrets, the privacy concerns that come with always-listening devices, OpenAI’s promise of safeguards that are verifiable and auditable, analyst skepticism over whether dedicated ChatGPT gadgets are even necessary, and tougher scrutiny under the European Union’s Digital Services Act.
There’s nothing to download yet, but OpenAI says more than one device is coming soon, and says it’s backing that push with custom chips and a $500 billion Nvidia-supported data-center effort.
