During its DevDay, OpenAI unveiled Dots, its agent offering to take care of our tasks and projects 24 hours a day. They arrive just as Meta’s Muse has managed to attract quite a bit of attention and rely on GPT-6 Astra so we can ask them anything at any time. Dots want to become an extension of the way we work, learning from our preferences while they carry out what we ask of them.
An agent that keeps working all day
Each Dot has its own cloud computer, its own browser, and access to more than 4,000 applications. We can talk to it from ChatGPT, Slack, or Microsoft Teams and yes, we can also call them when that’s more convenient for us. The more we work with our Dot, the better it will understand our preferences, including how we organize our work on projects and what we consider a good result.
The idea takes what we already saw with ChatGPT Work a step further. Dots can carry out research proactively, keep context across the different channels we message them on, and keep making progress between our conversations. We still have, of course, control over what it does, since we can set different rules to decide when it acts directly and when it has to ask for our approval.
One included Dot and more agents on the way
OpenAI is starting the rollout on the Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise plans. Users on these plans get one Dot included in their current plan and can configure it from ChatGPT on desktop (through the app or the web). The company is also working on a Dots teams feature, as part of the race to create more capable agents. It looks like ChatGPT is becoming more and more capable of working for us 24 hours a day.
