OpenAI will serve the interests of the CIA, something that other AIs have not wanted to do

OpenAI has formalized an agreement to implement its artificial intelligence models in the Pentagon’s classified networks, described as a “safe and productive collaboration” by its CEO, Sam Altman. This contract establishes a protection framework that includes human oversight and technical controls, ensuring that OpenAI maintains control over the security of its technology while working with sensitive data.

OpenAI has no issues with human rights

Among the guidelines of the agreement, the use of AI for mass surveillance and the autonomous decision-making of lethal attacks is prohibited. These restrictions have been instituted to address significant ethical concerns and ensure that there is always human accountability in critical decisions. OpenAI has also emphasized that any breach by the Government could lead to the suspension of service, although it does not anticipate this happening.

The implementation of artificial intelligence will be carried out through a classified government cloud, thus allowing for a centralization of permissions and audits. This approach is part of a larger effort by the Pentagon to diversify its technology partners, following previous experiences that generated supply risks related to failed agreements, such as the case of Anthropic during the Trump administration.

This change represents a remarkable transformation in the perception of AI, which shifts from being considered an office tool to an integral part of the defense infrastructure of the United States, carrying significant political weight. OpenAI, aware of the ethical tension in this context, seeks to balance its commitments to national security while maintaining its public image amid an active debate on surveillance and autonomous decision-making.

In addition, OpenAI is seeking private funding, with expectations of rounds that could reach up to 93 billion euros and a potential valuation exceeding 700 billion euros. The transparency in the agreement, highlighting the established “red lines,” aims to demonstrate that this collaboration has been carefully planned.
