The meeting with investors of Sony (Business Segment Meeting 2024), held last Wednesday, has generated a lot of buzz. The company has taken advantage of this event to show off the sales success of Helldivers 2 and Marvel’s Spiderman 2, for example.
Hideaki Nishino, recently appointed CEO of PlayStation alongside Hermen Hulst, stated during the presentation that PlayStation 5 is the most profitable generation of PlayStation to date. Nevertheless, its predecessor continues to hold its ground like no other.

Specifically, the user base of PlayStation 4 currently represents half of the monthly active users on consoles, about 49 million users. In the words of Nishino, as reported by VGC, “PlayStation 4 continues to be an important part of our business.”

In the presentation document we can see that PlayStation 5 users spend more money and dedicate more time to playing than PlayStation 4 users. The collected data shows that the average user of Sony’s latest console spends 176% more on additional content, 57% more on services, and 34% more on peripherals. Ironically, they also spend 12% less on buying games.
