Sony has locked in the next PlayStation State of Play for Thursday, September 3. The usual State of Play presentation will run first, and State of Play Japan will start right after it. Sony says the show will include updates from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners, with the main presentation ending on a longer look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation. After that, State of Play Japan will turn the focus to developers in Japan and across Asia, giving those games a little more breathing room than they’d normally get in a regular State of Play.
If you keep up with PS5 news or RPGs, this is probably one to watch. Just don’t go in expecting a full PlayStation Showcase. State of Play streams are usually smaller, even when rumors start flying, the August Phantom Blade Zero broadcast is still fresh in people’s minds, and fans are talking themselves into seeing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
And the reaction probably won’t stop at the trailers. The event lands while Sony is catching heat over what looks like a move away from physical discs, along with the usual worries that come with that: ownership, preservation, resale, and the chance of online protests around the show itself. Some analysts still think a digital-first strategy won’t really shift course, but the argument isn’t going away.
