Amazon’s Prime Video has landed the Emmy Awards, signing a reported six-year deal worth more than $120 million in total, or roughly $20 million to $25 million a year. That puts the Emmy Awards ceremony on streaming every September.
Amazon says it will carry the Emmys free each September and has global rights, ending the ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC rotation that had been in place since 1995. It’s also a major jump from the roughly $8 million to $10 million U.S. broadcasters were reportedly paying each year.
For the Television Academy, the deal means one permanent home and more consistency across production, marketing, and audience strategy. For Amazon, it’s a chance to turn the Emmys into more of a global event for younger streaming viewers, possibly with stronger digital promotion, added viewing features, and more social media momentum.
If you follow TV awards, this is a change to keep an eye on. Ratings have been sliding, and live events keep shifting from linear TV to streaming. The Emmys now get a shot at resetting their reach beyond the U.S., even if the territory-by-territory plans for marketing, distribution, and visibility still aren’t clear.
