Prime Video’s God of War adaptation may be headed for some major cast changes. Reports say all three key characters are involved: Kratos, Atreus, and Thrud. The biggest shake-up is Kratos , who’s reportedly getting a new actor during season 1 after Ryan Hurst is said to have suffered a bicep tear while filming. Atreus and Thrud, according to those same reports, are being recast for season 2 because the show is planning a time jump.
Kratos is the most dramatic case here. There’s still no detailed official explanation for what Hurst’s reported injury could mean for production, so for now it’s unclear how much this might affect filming, scheduling, or the show’s longer-term plans.
The Atreus and Thrud recasts sound more tied to the story itself. If season 2 really does jump forward in time, the series would be moving toward older versions of those characters, and likely toward the bigger conflicts of God of War: Ragnarok, rather than doing a beat-for-beat version of 2018’s smaller, more intimate story.
Ronald D. Moore has said he wants to hold on to the emotional center of the games, especially the relationship between Kratos and Atreus. If the series is really pushing into Ragnarok territory, that father-son dynamic only becomes more important.
If you’re following the Prime Video adaptation closely, this is something to watch. Recasting can be messy, even when viewers are willing to go along with it, as long as the emotional core still lands.
The series is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios for Prime Video. For now, the main things to look for are official cast confirmations and any changes to the production timeline.
