In a recent retrospective, Hollywood icon Quentin Tarantino weighed in on one of television’s most shocking career moves, recalling David Caruso’s abrupt departure from the critically acclaimed series ‘NYPD Blue’ during its second season in 1994.
Created by the legendary Steven Bochco and David Milch, the show had set new standards for police dramas, featuring Caruso as its standout star, John Kelly.
Despite the initial success of the series, Caruso’s departure came as a surprise to many fans, leaving them unaware of the contentious dynamics behind the scenes.

According to Bochco, discussions surrounding Caruso’s exit revealed that the actor had become increasingly difficult to work with, noting he was a “cancerous” presence on set.
Frustrated with his pay, which was $40,000 per episode while he allegedly earned $75,000 weekly filming movies, Caruso’s agent insisted on a substantial raise, hotel accommodations, first-class tickets, and an unprecedented request to be excused from filming for the last seven weeks of the season.
This ultimatum proved untenable for the production company, leading to a swift conclusion—Caruso filmed only four episodes of the second season before leaving ‘NYPD Blue’ for good, amid a clause preventing him from returning to television for five years.
Fast forward two years later, Caruso attempted to recover from this decision, albeit unsuccessfully, as his film career stagnated. Eventually, he re-emerged in another iconic role as Horatio Caine in ‘CSI: Miami’ five years later.
‘NYPD Blue’ remains accessible to a new generation of viewers, currently streaming on Disney+. Tarantino’s criticism of Caruso’s exit adds to the narrative of what many consider one of the most ill-fated career moves in television history.
