Rebel Moon was meant to be the Star Wars of Netflix: the critics are tearing it apart.

Of course, what matters most to Netflix is that people watch the movie, not what critics think. Something could have a score of zero…..

We have talked a lot about Rebel Moon, a project that started as part of the Star Wars universe and ended up in the hands of Zack Snyder, produced by Netflix as a great exclusive film. And they had everything to succeed.

Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire, directed by Zack Snyder, is receiving very negative reviews. As more reviews keep coming in, with 24 so far, the movie has a 28% on Rotten Tomatoes, a truly terrible score.

Before Snyder defenders jump in, Snyder is not usually “hated” by critics. Most of his films, from Dawn of the Dead to 300, including Watchmen and Justice League, have received a score between 60 and 70%.

A movie that had everything to succeed

Netflix has invested a huge amount of money and advertising in Rebel Moon, which was described as Zack Snyder’s Star Wars (based on a real rejected Star Wars proposal).

This is only part one of two, where a second movie will arrive in April 2024. There will also be at least one Rebel Moon video game, and Snyder has previously talked about a massive triple A RPG.

Netflix has successes and mistakes with its original movies. It can release Oscar contenders or deeply bad blockbusters, of which Rebel Moon wouldn’t be the first.

But it may be the most notable, and its budget is estimated to be around 166 million dollars for both films. Not bad in the realm of superheroes, but high for most movies.

Of course, what matters most to Netflix is that people watch the movie, not what critics think. Something could have a zero percent rating, but if it gets a billion hours of viewing, they wouldn’t care at all.

Critics hated a movie like Red Notice (37%), but fans seemed to love it (92%) and gave it the green light for a sequel without any issues.
