Resident Evil reboot footage is out now: major Raccoon City changes
Today brought the first footage from the new Resident Evil reboot, and one shot in particular hints that Raccoon City may not stick to the usual lore when the film hits theaters on September 18, 2026.
In the clip, there’s what looks like a dog with tentacles pushing out of its mouth. Fans have already linked that image to Las Plagas, not the T-Virus or G-Virus mutations tied to Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. If that’s really what the footage is showing, the movie would be folding two very different parts of the series into a single timeline.
Barbarian director Zach Cregger is behind the reboot, and he’s already said the September 18, 2026 release is an original story, not a beat-for-beat retelling of the games.
Cregger has also named Resident Evil 4 as a major influence. The film follows Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams, through the outbreak in a story that reportedly runs parallel to Resident Evil 2 rather than putting Leon or Claire at the center.
If you keep up with Resident Evil movie news, this footage is probably worth watching. Test screening reports have praised the pacing and the horror tone, but the public reaction has been more split over the bigger lore changes, especially after Welcome to Raccoon City and the Netflix series.
