Tommy & Me is picking up steam at Skydance Sports and Paramount, and Robert De Niro is in talks to play Dodgers legend Tommy Lasorda.
If that deal closes, it would put De Niro back in sports-movie territory, a lane he’s been in before more often than people sometimes remember: Raging Bull, where he won an Oscar for playing Jake LaMotta, plus Bang the Drum Slowly, The Fan, Hands of Stone, and Silver Linings Playbook. Reid Carolin is set to direct, and he co-wrote the script with George Gallo and Cambron Clark.
The story is still being kept quiet, but the outline isn’t hard to guess. The film will likely pull from Lasorda’s years as Dodgers manager from 1976 to 1996, the four National League pennants, the World Series titles in 1981 and 1988, his Hall of Fame induction in 1997, Team USA’s Olympic gold in 2000, and the long stretch that followed when he remained closely tied to the Dodgers. He died in 2021 at 93. The title also suggests this won’t be only a career rundown, and that there’s probably a more personal thread running through it.
If you tend to follow De Niro’s sports roles, this is one to keep on your radar, even with the early reaction looking a little mixed, especially since he’s coming off Netflix’s The Whisper Man and heading next into Focker-in-Law.
