Seeing the constant delays to The Batman II, I don’t think it really came as a surprise to anyone that Matt Reeves decided to ask for help out of desperation. This isn’t a situation like Justice League, where Joss Whedon took control and changed Zack Snyder’s film from top to bottom: in this case, Steven Soderbergh wants to preserve his colleague’s tone and quality… even if, to do so, he has to practically shadow him.
The Lord Who Directs in the Night
Robert Pattinson, DC’s only Batman right now (pending James Gunn announcing who’ll be the lead actor in the DC Universe), has already said he couldn’t be happier with the decision… because it’s possible that without Soderbergh the film would never have been finished. “I’m very happy that he’s come to help Matt. He’s incredibly generous, and he’s doing it in the most careful way possible, completely selflessly“.
What’s more, it’s reassured the cast, who were expecting a couple of months off: “I think Matt has worked incredibly hard on the script, and we were almost done already. So for someone to come in and say ‘I just want to help Matt; I want to do it alongside him and see it through to the editing room,’ and be as talented as Steven, is great”. This is one of those things people remember in Hollywood.
For now, the release date is still set for February 18, 2028, so they’ll have more than enough time to finish shooting and begin post-production. It remains to be seen whether the mess with the directors will end up affecting a film that, at the very least, should be on par with the first movie. We’ll stay bat-tuned.
