MyAnimeList, the largest anime database in the world with over 18 million registered users, has been blocked in Russia since October 22, 2025. This blockade, imposed by Roskomnadzor, the media oversight committee of Russia, is justified by the accusation that the platform promotes LGBTIQ+ content classified as ‘extremist’. Through such measures, the Russian government seeks to censor content that contradicts its norms regarding relationships considered ‘non-traditional’.
A normal social network and an even more normal database
The platform, which also functions as a dynamic social network for anime and manga fans, allows users to catalog series, share reviews, and recommendations among themselves. This makes it a valuable resource for fans, who now find themselves without access to their usual community and resources. The censorship of MyAnimeList is part of a broader pattern that has seen Roskomnadzor block several anime sites in recent years, including popular platforms like jut.su, AnimeGO, and YummyAnime, which would also have been censored under similar justifications.
According to reports, the Russian government indicates that the ban on MyAnimeList could be lifted if the platform decides to remove the content they have marked as ‘compromised’. Meanwhile, it is observed that anime has sparked the government’s interest, making it a new target for censorship. This year, in addition to MyAnimeList, sites like Anime Club and WikiAnime TV faced bans, aiming for more thorough control over digital content in the country.
In the context of these restrictions, other platforms such as Wattpad and Roblox have also been affected, where the response to censorship has varied. While Roblox quickly adapted to the government’s demands, Wattpad has ignored the requests to remove content deemed problematic. This trend highlights the growing concern about freedom of expression and access to creative content in Russia.
