Tokyo Ghoul is one of the most popular seinen of the last two decades. With a deep story, fascinating characters, and amazing battles, it managed to captivate most of the manga reading audience. That’s why it was so disappointing that the anime was, at best, mediocre. Only getting worse with each season, making it a pale reflection of the original’s brilliance.
That’s why manga fans have been asking for an anime remake for years. One that is more faithful to the manga and manages to capture everything that made it still relevant today. And although it hasn’t been confirmed yet, there is hope that it will happen soon.
The anime, which turns 10 years old in 2024, has officially announced that there will be a project to celebrate its tenth anniversary. While we have been presented with a trailer that shows us the original series, the project’s website has clarified what it is about. It’s not exactly what we were expecting.
Pierrot, the anime studio in charge of the original adaptation, will begin distributing the anime through their Youtube channel. Starting on April 5th with the first episode and including a new one every Friday, they aim to recreate that feeling of watching the series weekly as if it were the first time. Unfortunately, this is something we won’t be able to replicate from outside of Japan, as the series will have a regional block that won’t allow us to watch it from outside Japanese territory.
On the other hand, not all is lost. They have already announced that the anime will be present at Anime Japan 2024, both at the Pierrot and Marvelous stands, and that furthermore, some surprises will continue to be revealed as time goes on. Since they haven’t even started airing the series yet.
This leaves the door open for a remake, something highly desired and desirable, considering the success of previous anime remakes that improved thanks to this, such as Hunter x Hunter or Full Metal Alchemist. That’s why, while we still have to wait, we haven’t lost hope of what might happen. And if you’re curious to watch the original series, you can find it available on Crunchyroll.
