“Secret Invasion” is the latest major series that Disney Plus has released from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although we are in a critical moment for superhero movies, Disney has placed its hopes on a series that can restore the authenticity it may have lost in recent films.
Starring Samuel L. Jackson, the series focuses on the Skrull invasion set in motion in the events of Captain Marvel and how this alien species, tired of searching for a new home, has decided to secretly invade Earth. The truth is that we quite liked the first episode, but its reviews are not too favorable overall, and it has only managed a 63% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
But what is the reason behind this rating? Is it really a bad Disney Plus series, or as the audience, with a 77% positive reviews, suggests, is it better than expected?
Secret Invasion has not connected with the public
There’s no doubt that Secret Invasion is a somewhat risky endeavor. Despite being led by Nick Fury, there is not much trace of superpowers, and it doesn’t fit into the typical Marvel genre, resembling more of a spy series like many others we can find on streaming platforms.
This is something that may have deterred the audience from the series. It’s not your typical Marvel production. Furthermore, its pace is slower than usual, relying on dialogue, subtext, and tense situations, which makes it less appealing to the mainstream audience.

But what seems to be working the least is the emotional aspect. Neither the new characters (like Emilia Clarke’s) generate much interest, nor does the supposed significant death of Maria Hill, who has always been a secondary character of little importance.
This, coupled with the convoluted Skrull storyline and their motivations not being well explained, results in people not being very invested in Secret Invasion. Perhaps this may change in the future, but it certainly doesn’t appear to be the great savior that Marvel needs.
