The work of Stephen King has been adapted to film numerous times, generating both great successes and notable failures. Recently, the acclaimed author has spoken out about one of his underrated adaptations, Cell, released in 2016 and based on his eponymous novel published in 2006. King believes that this movie is unjustly undervalued, despite receiving only 11% positive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, becoming the subject of criticism and unfavorable comments from the public.
A misunderstood gem according to the author
Cell narrates how signals transmitted through mobile phones transform most of humanity into fierce, bloodthirsty creatures. Although the premise aligned with King’s talent for exploring terror in everyday life, the adaptation failed to connect with the audience. King, surprised by the poor reception of the film, has expressed his bewilderment, indicating that there are adaptations of his works that are considered inferior to Cell.
However, the author’s opinion is not without controversy. Throughout his career, he has made similar statements regarding other adaptations, sometimes calling into question his own objectivity. For example, in the past, King expressed a preference for the 1997 miniseries of The Shining, despite the fact that Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation is acclaimed as a classic. This history leads some critics to question the reliability of his evaluation regarding his own works.
Despite the poor reception of Cell, the writer continues to defend his vision, suggesting that the evaluation of adaptations can be subjective and that readers and viewers often have different experiences. With this, King maintains his passion for storytelling, and perhaps, in the future, Cell will find the recognition he believes it deserves.
