Pedro Almodóvar directing a western is something newsworthy, to say the least. But if the protagonists of the western are none other than Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, things get even more interesting. And if on top of that it is a gay story in which we will see the two actors giving it to each other, you can’t even imagine.
Almodóvar has just released the trailer for Strange Way of Life, his next film that tells everything I summarized in the previous paragraph: the story of two bandits who become lovers. It’s actually a 30-minute short film, but that doesn’t make it any less interesting.
A queer western starring Pedro Pascal
Strange Way of Life will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival (May 16-27) and boasts an unparalleled cast. In addition to Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, the cast includes Jason Fernández, José Condessa, George Steane, Manu Ríos, Pedro Casablanc, Sara Sálamo and Erenice Lohan.
The film was shot entirely in the Tabernas desert (Almeria, Spain), a common location for classic westerns. And, according to the director, it will feature “dialogues that have never been produced before in a western”. The subject matter is clear, masculinity “in a deep sense”, and one only has to take a look at the trailer to realize that the performances will be very interesting.

The official synopsis of the short film is as follows:
A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. Twenty-five years earlier, the two worked together as hired guns. Silva comes on the pretext of reuniting with his friend from his youth, and they do indeed celebrate their meeting, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip is not the memory of their old friendship.
