Rumors about a Super Mario 64 remake are starting to circulate again as the game’s 30th anniversary in North America gets closer on Sept. 26, 2026. Still, Nintendo hasn’t announced a Super Mario 64 remake, remaster, event, or any other anniversary plan.
The renewed speculation isn’t hard to understand. Super Mario 64 helped define what a 3D platformer could be, with analog movement, open-ended levels, and a camera that was ambitious for its time. Add Nintendo’s recent interest in Nintendo 64-era games like Star Fox 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and the idea of Super Mario 64 coming back doesn’t feel far-fetched. Just not close.
And most fans aren’t talking about a basic visual touch-up. They want rebuilt graphics, tighter controls, a much better camera, improved audio, and maybe even some extra or restored content. That’s even more true because 2004’s Super Mario 64 DS left fans split over its control scheme and design changes, while 2020’s Super Mario 3D All-Stars was, in practice, just an enhanced port.
If you’re hoping Nintendo does it, this is the kind of thing to watch, but it still shouldn’t be treated like actual news. Any real Super Mario 64 remake would need to clean up the game’s dated parts without sanding off what made the original special in the first place. Fan mods and unofficial remakes have already made one thing pretty clear: people want this. Even if Nintendo usually shuts those projects down.
For now, the only versions of Super Mario 64 you can get are the ones already available on Nintendo platforms. There isn’t a new Super Mario 64 remake to download.
