James Gunn and David Corenswet are redefining the perception of Superman in their upcoming film of the new DC universe, scheduled to hit theaters on July 11. In a recent interview, the two creatives discussed how their approach aims to dismantle the image of Superman as a “terrifying monster” due to his impressive powers.
An identity that is not so secret now
Corenswet, who will portray the iconic hero, convinced Gunn to keep the notorious red pants of Superman’s suit. He argues that their “ridiculous” look helps to soften the perception of his immense power. “Maybe they are designed to look a little silly. Basically, to downplay his true strength,” Corenswet commented. This approach seeks to balance the hero’s formidable abilities with his more human side.
James Gunn expanded on this concept, emphasizing that in his version everyone knows that Superman is an alien. “He shoots rays from his eyes, can destroy with his breath, and is, in a way, a terrifying creature,” Gunn points out. However, he also highlighted Superman’s fundamental desire to be loved by humanity, especially by children. “He wants children not to be afraid of him,” Gunn explained, which reflects a critical aspect of his character in this narrative.
Recently, new previews have been shared showcasing Superman’s extreme abilities, including his heat vision, the ability to lift skyscrapers, and his flight into deep space. As the release date approaches, the anticipation of seeing how these elements will be integrated into the story grows, promising a new era for the Man of Steel in cinema.
